Usage and Trainings of Punches in Taekwondo

started by: Zheng Liang

eh... Seems that the forum is abit of a low in posting rate, therefore I shall start abit of a discussion here...

please share your views on the application and the usefulness/uselessness of punches in Taekwondo sparrings and patterns..

personnally, I feel that punching during sparing can be a good tactic in creating distance and also fear in your opponent. That is of course if you use it together with the correct kicking techniques and also proper trainings and usage of punches.. Looking at our trainings at NYPTKD, you would have notice that we only focus on kickings and very few punching trainings. So as to say, when the time come for you to actually use a punch, you may not be able to or not want to do it...

With this in mind, I would like to ask whether or not should we have some punching trainings during our training sessions or should we just proceed with our current practise and leave the students to explore the way of the punch themselves?

I think the lack of punch/hand technique training is because of scoring with a punch is harder to get than with a kick.

But I do agree that punching is very effective in sparring, because people may not expect to see that in TKD sparring for the same reason.
Even if it does not score, it has many uses like Zheng Liang has said. Opponents won`t like to hug you as much if you tend to punch more also.

I think we can do some training on punches, but I think they got to be on the receiving end of it before they will use it more..

Punching do effective damage and ideally as combination follow-up with kick.

As TKD main core of technique is based on kicking, Punching is seldom practice in sparing.
Points are often not scored cos punches are not as powerful as kick and before your punch reach the opponent, the kick shall land on you first.

Ofcos we can't state punch are useless, else all karate-do members will start attacking my comment.

Punch is useful is close contact and also if able to use more technique of punches like upper cut punch, back swing punch, and more... that will add up the advantage of the punch in TKD tournament.

However in TKD, due to nature of sport, sportmanship, entering the olympic game status, we can only apply straight punch for tournament. Anyway i understand their stand, cos if more variable to punches can be adopt in TKD tournament, then it will completely transformed tkd tournament into becoming street fight tournament or kick boxing. They want to keep the sport image healthy and safe yet still create impact if we are offended. If you able to know the history of TKD and how we are trained last last time, you will be suprised how TKD training are transformed.

In pattern, you are being trained in varies types of punches and the qi. Thats is one of the pratices in TKD punching, maybe in future, i will teach u all how to apply in non-tournament style (Self defence).

Anyway we drop in more comments and open up more tropic to share. Let all the new freshies participate too.

Cheers.
